Looking to build my first pc on a budget, fed up of my Xbox one so going to take the plunge and build a budget gaming pc, I know the fx is the best processor but I want to have a good upgrade path hence including the i3. I will also buy a discrete Gpu to go with it. Any help would be appreciated.

The FX "8520" may never come. As of the latest AMD roadmaps, Steamroller FX CPUs aren't mentioned anywhere.
The Intel 8# may has a pretty limited upgrade path since rumors suggest that changes in Broadwell requires a new chipset.

The AMD FX 6300 can be overclocked, but only just so to match Haswell i3s and the completely bottom tier of Ivy Bridge i5s. You can move up to the FX 8320/8350, but that seems to be a pretty modest upgrade.
The Intel i3 is faster at stock, but cannot be overclocked. It can, however, be upgraded to an Haswell i5 and i7 which would not only be a pretty decent speed bump but exceed the power of the FX 8320 and FX 8350 in gaming.

Yes the 6300 does give a nice upgrade-path(I dont get why you choose the 8350 and not 8320, and he should never get any of the 9xxx series).
But so does the i3.

@OP Give me a budget and I'll mix something up for you

Go for the FX-6300. I recently built my rig with one and it OC's so easily. Not much difference in gaming and the extra cores come in handy for multitasking and video editing/rendering.

And most importantly... it's so much cheaper.

I was just giving examples of CPUs..
Yes, i3 gives a good upgrade path, but won't deliver the performance of the FX6300 and we don't know if he will have to spend 4 or 5 years with the i3 (which I wouldn't like :s)

I would Probable upgrade the cpu in a year's time that's why I was thinking of going with the i3,but the 6300 is far cheaper and better at the moment. I'm going to spend about £450,i was going to go with a 270 or 270, 8gb of fastest ram and a bog standard hard drive to start with. But I am looking good to make this my main gaming machine for years to come.

Sounds good.

I can recommend G.Skill ripjaws memory. On ccl/ebuyer you can pick up a dual channel 1600mhz 2x4GB kit for £62.

1TB Western Digital Blue's are about £40 on amazon.

If you want to extend your budget £30-50 I'd go for a GTX760 as its a brilliant piece of kit.

With the 6300 and 760GTX I can max out BF3 at 1080 with 80+ fps :D
