I think I might have messed up with Pro Pack.

Okay, so I'm building my first gaming PC and I heard that Windows 8.1 was good for gaming.

So I decided to get it off of Amazon, seeing that the pro pack was only a few pounds more I decided to get the Pro Pack.

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Microsoft-Windows-8-1-Pro-Pack/dp/B00FRAE7GG/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1390480624&sr=8-1&keywords=windows+8.1+pro+pack

But to my surprise there was no 8.1 OS disk, just an activation code and a box.

Did I mess up and just buy an upgrade code for an OS I don't even have?

Is there anyway I can get the 8.1 OS and then activate it to a genuine version with the Pro Pack code?

That which you bought is only an upgrade from regular 8.1 to 8.1 Pro, with Media Center

From the fine print at Amazon:
"Product Description

Only if you currently have a device running Windows 8.1 ("Core") operating system can you upgrade to Windows 8.1 Pro (Professional) using this Windows 8.1 Pro Pack (upgrade) product."

You must be running 8.1 first. The only way to get and install it is to buy it.

Hi There

Yes you have bought an upgrade key, but dont worry there are ways around it

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-gb/windows-8/create-reset-refresh-media

take a look at the link above and download the windows 8 setup and burn the ISO to a cd or USB then install windows 8

But to get that programme running wouldn't I have to be on an OS anyway?
I'd have to install an OS to then be able to run the programme to install 8.1?

You can't do this from a completely bare PC. And I'm not 100% sure that linked instruction will work anyway.

what you could do is install windows 7 and dont register it then do the upgrade

Would the key I bough work as an activation code for activating 8.1 or is it explicitly 8.1 to 8.1 pro pack and will not work for anything else?

If I were to download the installation from someone other than Microsoft and then use my product key I bought to validate that copy of windows 8.1 would that work?

What you bought is explicitly an upgrade from 8.1 to 8.1 Pro. I don't think it will work to activate a basic 8.1 install.

And don't just 'download the installation from someone other than Microsoft'.
1. That is illegal and explicitly against Forum rules
2. You are very, very likely to get other nasties with such a 'download'
3. Further discussion along those lines will result in this thread being deleted.

Did you open the box? If not, you 'might' be able to send it back.

I was just thinking about sending it back, but I already took it out of the plastic and opened it expecting the disk to be inside...

I guess I'll just have to buy the original installation disk, but I can't seem to find an 8.1 installation disk anywhere on Amazon

Would I have to buy the Windows 8 Installation disk, then upgrade that to 8.1 once it's all installed? And then could I use the key I have not to upgrade that to pro if I can't send it back?

Is this what I want? Does it come with the disk? (Just to make sure)
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Microsoft-Windows-Standard-WN7-00403-English/dp/B009HI2W66/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1390484575&sr=8-4&keywords=windows+installation+disc

Just a question, I'm not going to do it but I was wondering if it would be illegal to use a copped version of a windows installation disk but use a paid pass code to activate it?

I always assumed it was just the activation code you were paying for.

Windows 8.1, incl the installation CD
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Microsoft-Windows-8-1-Full-Version/dp/B00FRAE7MU

Install that, and then upgrade with what you already bought.

Do not download it from dodgy site, and attempt to activate with a valid key. There is no telling what exactly is in that 'download'. Since you have to buy the key anyway.....just buy it with the install media.

Yes, the activation key is what actually costs. The cost of the actual CD in the box is trivial.
