Windows 7 AMD ATI Driver won't install

Hi guys! due to a lot of recent BSOD's that was related to the atikdmg.sys, I decided to explore the possibility of the problem being driver related.

I run windows 7 ultimate, using ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4670.

I removed all drivers that was related to my graphic card, and used the installer that AMD recommended (13-9-legacy_vista_win7_32_dd_ccc) on their official forum.

When the installer is finished, everything seems to be in order, and it tells me to restart. After the restart CCC tells me that there's no settings that can be configured by CCC, I have tried installing the driver directly from the root of the installer package previously mentioned. (13-9-legacy_vista_win7_32_dd_ccc\Packages\Drivers\Display\CL158498)

This doesn't fix my problem. It's exactly the same as before, the driver is installed without any problems, but after the restart, same error occurs.

Solution
On the vast majority of laptops, the GPU is integrated on the motherboard and not replaceable like in a desktop PC.

I would recommend changing the thermal compound on the CPU and GPU heatsinks.

I'd have to check, but I believe that the driver itself has nothing to do with CCC's capability to run? From the steps I've taken so far I'd say that it should be unrelated.

Please let me know if it isn't so, thanks!

Edit: So I checked, and the only framework update available is one for 3.5, which I don't even seem to have installed (Running 4.0)

The driver is indeed separate from Catalyst in that it can be installed without Catalyst at all. In fact, you really don't need Catalyst unless you plan to customize/change your default settings. CCC (Catalyst) requires the aforementioned updates to run. The drivers don't need those updates.

I updated my previous response with additional information.

The driver, although the installer says otherwise, doesn't seem to be working at all. Videos isn't running smooth and I imagine games would be even more problematic. I'd like to continue to use CCC, as it has functions I use.

Do you have any idea of why it wouldn't recognize the driver? I'll quickly explain what I did prior to this problem:

Because of the BSoD's I wanted to start fresh, so I used "Driver Fusion" and uninstalled GPU, soundcard and chipset drivers. I then updated chipset drivers, sound drivers and GPU drivers in that order. ... And here we are. :)

I have also considered that my product manufacturer Acer had their own driver updates and that my laptop just didn't function with the official ones, so I tried to re-run Driver Fusion and install with the newest drivers recommended by Acer - Also to no avail.

By the way, thank you so much for helping out!

In Control Panel/Device Manager, what driver is listed as being installed for your video card (under Display adapters)?

You could also be having a heat and/or power issue or the GPU could be defective, but we are not there yet in terms of troubleshooting.

It appears that you are not using the current 13.9 driver from AMD, rather you are using the Windows Update provided driver that is older.

You may need to manually update the driver to get it to install proper. Do you know how to do that?

Yes. That's what I've been trying to do, which doesn't seem to work :(

This is the driver that AMD wants me to install - Is it also the one that windows update provides? -> CL158498.INF

Acer Aspire 8935g

So Apparently I just had to restart from the driver settings shown in the picture, rather than manually restarting from Windows Start. ?

Now it seems to be running with a functioning driver, but CCC comes with an error message along the lines of "Could Not Load File or Assembly CLI.Implementation"

Do you know how to fix that?

Since the computer crashed O decided to redo the process with the other driverset. Both has now failed me, and I am completely lost. I believe that I can exclude malware and drivers from the list of suspects to the horrible crime of rendering my computer useless and unstable.

You mentioned power and heat to be possible causes.. I believe I can exclude heat as it has happened seconds after first boot of the day and in general seems to be completely random. I have however experienced a lot of static electricity at points, so it might be a power failure?

Or maybe you have other ideas.

The BSod specific message is this: UNEXPECTED_KERNEL_MODE_TRAP

No, the only time I've disassembled it was to remove dust. It's about a year ago. (although I frequently do it from the outside. I didn't change any thermal compound (that's the paste, right?)

No I didn't, but the crashes has been occurring right after first boot of the day, and all the way to after ~7 hours with no problems. I don't see heat being the trigger in this, as I'm playing a couple of gpu heavy games, and have been playing them for hours with no problem, but also encountered 4+ crashes during an hour. It appears to be completely random, except for the error... :/

I just had the most peculiar thing happen, where my screen went black as it does everytime right before BSoD, then white in a milisecond, also happens frequently, but then it turned red, green, grey and white in different variants on the same screen image, and several other colors. It looked like some sort of test actually. Does this help in any way?

Uh-oh :(

If the GPU is failing, how does buying a new motherboard help? And is there nothing I can do to resolve this, even temporarily? I will not be able to afford a new computer for at least a couple of months..
