SSD not always detected in BIOS w/ new mobo. Sometimes very flaky when it is detected.

Hi guys,

I am having an issue where my SSD isn't detected most of the time. After reading some other threads I think it might be that it works from power-off but not from reboot (or not reliably if it does happen to work on reboot). This is with a brand new mobo and CPU.

I just returned an FX-6300 for causing random reboots with my old mobo (which worked fine with a Phenom X6 1045T). I read that the PSU is often the culprit for issues like that, but since my old CPU worked fine I wrote it off as the new one being a dud. Then the other day I replaced both mobo and CPU and now I have an SSD issue instead.

I am not sure if my SSD is dying (would be rather convenient timing since I just bought a new mobo & CPU) or if my PSU actually is at fault and I didn't have a dud FX-6300. Or it could be something else. Here's the combinations of hardware and problems I've had:

No SSD detection on reboots (or sometimes detection but unusably slow/unreliable OS):

  • Mobo: ASUS H81M-E
    CPU: Core i3 4330

Random reboots (event viewer message says something about NorthBridge):

  • Mobo: ASUS M5A78L-M LX Plus
    CPU: FX 6300

Working fine:

  • Mobo: ASUS M5A78L-M LX Plus
    CPU: Phenom X6 1045T

  • SSD is an OCZ Agility 2 120GB, FW 1.37
HDD is a 2TB WD Green. Always detected (which makes me think it's not PSU related)
    RAM is 2x4GB Corsair Vengence DDR3 1833 (@ 1333)
GPU is a Sapphire HD 7870 Ghz Edition 2GB
PSU is an 'Ultra' (TigerDirect brand w/ lifetime warranty) 550W (1yr old)

Some other things to note, I've got the latest BIOS version, I've reset to defaults, I've checked connections, unplugged the HDD and left only the SSD, tried different SATA ports...

As for BIOS settings:
I've got Intel Rapid Boot disabled but Intel Smart Connect enabled (this is in my list to try disabling).
Tried playing with CSM (compatibility settings for the drives)
All ports are set to AHCI mode
Hot Plug Enabled (was disabled by default, seemed worse disabled but possibly had no effect).
Not overclocking

While I write this my PC is at home cloning the SSD partition to unallocated space on my HDD while I am at work. At lunch I plan to test booting from from power-off vs rebooting to see if I can make sure that it is in fact always working from power-off vs reboot.

Any help is appreciated. I am prepared to buy either a new PSU or SSD but don't want to pick the wrong component to have to try and return it and buy the other.

Even if they say there's no workaround, I take for granted you already got latest firmware on the SSD?

Just on a side note I'm not a big fan of OCZ products in general. Their power supplies aren't the best, same thing with their SSDs. Not saying they're not making good hardware, but I always have a feeling that for the same price there are better alternatives. Just saying.

If you have the money, I would suggest you get a new SSD instead, and then you can use this Agility2 in another system, like an older laptop or older computer you have laying around. You can even give it or sell it to some family member who have older hardware that is likely to work well with it.

Well, I just stumbled across this: http://www.ocztechnologyforum.com/forum/showthread.php?111939-Vertex-2-sometimes-not-detected-in-BIOS-Boot-menu-crashed-on-Windows-Startup

Quote from official OCZ staff: "I am sorry to say that afaik at this moment in time, SSD with the SandForce 12xx/15xx series controller are not fully compatible with any Haswell platform. This includes the OCZ Vertex 2 and I know of no current workaround."

Another Quote: "Haswell support, or lack of it, only affects OCZ SATA SSD with the SF12xx/15xx controllers.. so Vertex 2, Agilty 2 and Vertex LE. This is also true for ANY OTHER make SSD with the specific SandForce 12xx/15xx controller."

Damn.

Hi MC_K7, yes it's got the latest FW and is EOL.

I got the drive in a trade for a 500GB WD Black laptop drive. Wasn't my first choice but was a great trade considering 2 of the WD's came with a laptop of mine and I wasn't using one of them anyway.

Looks like I'll be buying a new drive today at lunch then. I'll use the OCZ with the old mobo and CPU. Seems I have almost an entire PC from my 'old' parts!

Lol! Maybe I'm just lucky but I never had any compatibility issues with SSD and I installed many of them, either in very old or new PC.
