To clarify the question I want to understand how HDMI 1.4a will be updated to 1.4b. Will it be possible to do a firmware update or does the hardware for the connection have to be designed specifically for 1.4b?

I am contemplating a purchase on a 4k tv/monitor but the input for hdmi is 1.4a. I'm concerned about future compatibility and function especially since 1.4b will do 4k at 60hz.

Actually, HDMI 1.4b does not allow 3d at 120hz, nor 2d at 120hz. It allows 3D at 60hz, which is all 3D allows anyways. 2.0 is also supposed to allow for 120hz at 1080p. It's been spec'ed for a few years, yet no one uses it :(

I was wrong about 1.4b allowing for 4k at 60hz. 1.4b provides for 3d at 120hz while specification 2.0 will provide for 4k resolution at 60hz. That implementation seems like it will be quite some distance into the future.

I would hold off on 4k TV's right now. They are too overpriced, not standardized enough in terms of how to get stuff onto the screen, and they are sorely lacking for content. Where are you gonna actually find anything in 4k to watch on them? Basically nowhere.
