my wd external hard drive isnt showing up

My WD (my passport 500gb) isn't showing up on any pc that I try. It was working fine the other day but after flying over seas it stopped working and I don't know whats wrong with it. when I plug it in the pc makes the noise when something connects and the hard drive light come on but when I go to my computer it doesn't show up as an option. Please tell me how to fix it without losing the things in my hard drive.

Can you see disk in disk management?[/quote
where do I find disk management
  3. Might be too late for you as I note how old your post is but thought it might be useful for other people who find this via a search engine. My WD external hard drive suddenly, overnight, became inaccessible. Windows error logs included 153 (IO operation was retried), Error 51 (An error was detected on device \Device\Harddisk\DR'X' during a paging operation'), Error 11(The device detected a controller error on \Device\Harddisk1\DR10). You know if it's the external drive if you try and plug the device into another PC/Laptop and you get the same problem (device not showing up). That means it's screwed. End of. It's not got that nice SCSI interface like laptop drives have when you take them out so you can't mount it. Once your WS External drive stops being recognised by more than one laptop/PC, it's curtains. I have one WD drive which did this to me today. I bought it about 2 years ago. I have 3 Verbatim drives of varying years, the eldest is 7 years. They are all still fine. Moral: Do not buy WD hard drives.
