I have a gtx 760 for gaming.

Is it possible to have a 2nd card, a HD 7850 in another pciex16 slot to mine litecoins only when I'm not gaming, or if it is possible, at the same time?

Solution

Yes your MB has : 2 x PCI Express x16 slots, running at x16 (PCIEX16_1, PCIEX16_2)

So you can attach both cards (GTX & AMD) on the respective slots to get...
If you have a MB that supports 2 x (x16) slots, runs at x 16 speed (but that's rare) and have XP or WIN 7 as OS, then yes you can install both cards.

But if 1 slot runs @ x8 speed then the card attached to that slot will hinder in performance. And you cannot get both cards working simultaneously for gaming.

I have a GA 990FXA UD3, it has 3 slots.

I have a 630W PSU. Heat in the case shouldn't be a problem, I have CPU on H100i pointing out top of case. I have IR heatgun next to it and HWinfo monitoring VRM's, CPU, and GPU whenever I'm gaming.

How do I go about this? Do I just plug the card in and that's it? Do I need the driver for it if I'm mining with it? Can I mine and game at the same time since mining doesn't use the CPU at all? (barely, saw a rig with a single core P.O.S. with 4x 280x's running) I have an 8350.

Sorry, I meant litecoins(dogecoins in my case) not bitcoins

Agreed they will both run at the slowest cards speed.

I'm trying to use just the GTX 760 for gaming and only use the HD 7850 for mining.

Yes your MB has : 2 x PCI Express x16 slots, running at x16 (PCIEX16_1, PCIEX16_2)

So you can attach both cards (GTX & AMD) on the respective slots to get the best out of it. Both cards will run on their full bandwidth no worries.

Insert the cards and install the drivers for them, and you are ready to go. But you cant game with both the cards at the same time. You have to either use the GTX one or the AMD one for gaming.

You need XP or WIN 7 as OS just keep that in mind.

GTX 760 will use 170W on max load, and HD 7850 will use 130W on max load, so you will be fine with the power consumption.

But I wonder why you want to use both cards, I don't see any benefit. And I don't know anything about bitcoin, litecoin whatever you say.

And yes you can game with 760 and mine with 7850, but not at the same time. Good luck.

P.S. Your MB has 4 x PCI-E slots. 2 runs @ 16x another 2 runs @ 4x speed.

2 x PCI Express x16 slots, running at x16 (PCIEX16_1, PCIEX16_2) (Note 3)
2 x PCI Express x16 slots, running at x4 (PCIEX4_1, PCIEX4_2)

Mining will max out gpu usage so be aware of how close your cards are to each other due to rising temperatures. It will also reduce the lifespan of your psu. Unless something has changed like I said in previous post you will need to have both drivers installed which in the past caused big conflicts with each other. Sell the cards and get say a good single amd card with a good cooling solution on it to keep temps down.
