Hi, lately I found my computer to be freezing and stop working. Although the mouse still moves during these time intervals I can't connect to the internet and things won't open or take awhile. It has times of running just fine as well. But these occurrences are happening way too often now, when they used to never. I have a very capable computer and I have no idea what the problem could be. I tried defragging my harddrive, system cleanup, uninstalling programs. I have about 75 GB free of 250GB on my hard drive. Any resolutions you could come up with for me? I'm out of ideas and would really like them to stop. I feel it could be a simple driver issue but I'm not a computer doctor. Thanks for your time!

Awesome the WDC on the hard drive device description stands for Western Digital Corporation. I have included a link below to a hard drive test utility that will test your hard drive. If it detects bad sectors or blocks it will let you know for sure that it's not just Windows acting up and that the hard drive does indeed have corruption. Run the full test on your hard drive with the utility and let me know whether it detected any errors or not.

If it finds any errors I recommend you make a backup of any files on the hard drive that you cannot replace to an external hard drive or DVD. Also making a backup of windows would be helpful as if my next fix does not work you may have to reformat the drive and reinstall windows in order to...

Is this sudden? What are your computer's specs? It sounds like it could be Malware, download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware (it's free) and do a full system scan, it could take anywhere from 30 minutes to 3 hours depending on your PC's power and hard drive contents. If you have a decent processor with such a small amount of data on your HDD it should maybe take a little under an hour, depending though.

It's fairly sudden! The random acts of it not working was sudden, but only happened here and there, then gradually became an every 15 minutes deal. I'm not sure how to check my 'specs' to be honest.

Try what I said in the first answer, see if it helps.

You could try uninstalling and re-installing your display drivers, google a guide for your type (AMD or Nvidia, possibly Intel) and do it correctly along with the accordance of the guide. That may help, I don't know.

You're welcome, how old is the sytem? Is it a laptop as well, or desktop, and if it is a laptop, what manufacturer?

Open your task manager and switch to the performance tab (If using windows 8 or 8.1) otherwise you should see a performance graph for your CPU and RAM as soon as you open it, leave it running. When you notice performance issues look at the performance graph are any of the values spiked very high? Particularly your CPU a screen shot of it during this occurrence would be even better for me to help you out. Note you can open task manager by right clicking on your bottom task bar and selecting task manager.

Another helpful tool is Event Viewer. To access this simply right click on the My Computer icon either in your Start Menu, your desktop, or you file explorer and hit Manage. Expand the event viewer drop down, expand the windows logs drop down, look through the Application and System lists in the drop down. Do you see any Red symbols stating Error or Critical? Also look for Yellow symbols stating Warning. If you see any let us know what is listed under the source column for that particular Error, Critical, or Warning and also whats listed under the Event ID column. Again screen shots of these errors would also help allot!

There is a lot of errors in the systems list saying "disk" and then in applications a lot of errors under "bonjour service" and one under "wmi" whatever those are. I'd love to send screenshots although I don't know how on this site yet, I'm still new. also to the gentleman above, it's a p.c and it's fairly new. Built it possibly ~two years ago with high grade parts.

actually while replying to you it had another episode and i was able to take a picture of it with my phone (the performance tab) since it wouldn't work to screen shot it. I definitely saw a significant increase.

Alright that is good we are onto a lead! Bonjour service is related to Apple products and that application error can usually be fixed by uninstalling and reinstalling ITunes. As for the WMI error you see that is very important so I'm going to need more information on it.

If you click once on the event in event viewer the box underneath the list should populate with some information. This is the information I will need in order to help you fix that issue, also let me know what the number under the Event ID for the WMI error is please! You should be able to copy and paste what appears in the box into a post. If there are multiple errors that say WMI look at a few of them, if they all say the same thing in the box I will only need to see a copy of one of them. If they say different things I will need to one of each that is different so I can get an idea of the error chain.

As for your disk error under the system events I will need to know the Event ID for that also and a copy of what displays in it's box when you click on the event. If this it is too much information to put into a post feel free to PM me with it.

As for increase in resource usage note that you will see a spike that will then instantly drop down right after opening the event viewer, this is normal. If it went up at some point and stayed up while you were experiencing this issue it is important! Was the chart under CPU high? Can you give me an estimate of about how much percent up the graph the line was? Also was the RAM chart maxed out at all or very high?

The CPU chart was baselined about 25-50% through the grid in all 6 boxes. The line on the bottom that says memory, however stayed normal. midway through which where it is right now.

The WMI information was :: Event filter with query "SELECT * FROM __InstanceModificationEvent WITHIN 60 WHERE TargetInstance ISA "Win32_Processor" AND TargetInstance.LoadPercentage > 99" could not be reactivated in namespace "//./root/CIMV2" because of error 0x80041003. Events cannot be delivered through this filter until the problem is corrected.

they were all the same.

The Disk was :: The device, \Device\Harddisk0\DR0, has a bad block.

they were all the same.

One error was MCUpdate with the description : 7:59:01 AM - Error connecting to the internet.
7:59:01 AM - Unable to contact server..

a warning for kernel events :: The maximum file size for session "{66914364-456a-4ab5-8b5a-b162b596161b}" has been reached. As a result, events might be lost (not logged) to file "C:\Windows\AppCompat\Programs\Install\INSTALL_0_{8a5c6960-3d5e-4bcb-a31a-60ee4f66966b}.etl". The maximum files size is currently set to 10485760 bytes.

and bonjour service was : Task Scheduling Error: Continuously busy for more than a second

Ok one key problem which needs to be solved is the bad block on the hard drive. Try running disk defragementation on your hard drive or hard drives, next you will want to run a smart check on the drive to check it for errors. What brand hard drive do you have?

Disk Defrag can be run by right clicking on your hard drive under my computer hitting properties and switching to the tools tab. Under the tools tab hit the defragment and optimize drives button to run disk defragmenter. Once that is open click on the optimize button in the disk defragmenter utility and it will begin working on the drive.

Once I know what brand hard drive you have I can point you to a manufacturer specific utility that will attempt to find and fix any bad blocks or sectors on the hard drive! If I were you I would make a backup of all your important data from that hard drive just in case the SMART utility cannot repair the drive as if that is the case a reformat of the hard drive may be necessary to fix this situation.

I ran the disk defrag just three days ago, it didn't help any. I have a AMD Phenom II x6 1055T processor, 8 GB ram and an AMD-PC computer and it says my hard drive is WDC WD3200AAKS61LAO ATA Device or something, not sure if that's what you're looking for or if it's something random I found haha.

Basically a description of the problem so far is as follows, a bad block on the hard drive is causing a certain program or Windows itself to all of a sudden cause the system to run at a degraded pace. This slowness is due to to the program or Windows trying to read a file or files that are corrupted by the bad block. This corruption causes WMI errors to throw which I'm hoping are related to just WIndows and not a program that was installed on top of Windows.

Link to Data Lifeguard Utility from Western Digital:
http://support.wd.com/product/download.asp?groupid=810&sid=3&lang=en
NOTE: DO NOT SELECT WRITE ZEROS!

The next option is to run a CHKDSK on the hard drive to attempt to repair any corrupted files in the Windows file system from the Windows Recovery Console. This is a more advanced process and I will cover it if the utility for sure confirms that the issue is hard drive corruption.

Ok next I would recommend running CHKDSK on the drive. This can be done by right clicking on the drive in My Computer, clicking properties, switching to the tools tab, and then underneath Error Checking click check. This will probably notify you that it cannot do the check while the disk is in use and should either tell you it will run it after restarting or it will ask you if you would like to run it at the next restart. After restarting your computer it should proceed into the CHKDSK process which will scan the disk and files and attempt to repair them. Hopefully this works at fixing the damage to the disk!
