The title says it all. To expand on this, say you have a triple core processor and three programs are open. One is playing music. Another is doing graphics work. Another is being interrupted by automatic downloads and an antivirus program. Is each task assigned to it's own specific core?

Do multicore processors assign different cores to different running apps?

Definately MAYBE. It depends upon how the apps and programs are written and the instructions within the CPU. In a perfect scenario your description would have the 3 cores working with separate apps etc., but in reality it rarely works that way.
