I am going to build my first system. I'll use it for as my work-from-home machine as well as some gaming. Base OS will be Win7 or 8.1.

Work mainly consists using Excel and small, <100MB, Access databases; running Chrome with, normally, 20+ tabs; running Firefox with 6-12 tabs; RDP sessions, 1-2; fairly regularly streaming video/youtube. Additionally I'd like to experiment with running virtual machines, 1-3(?), using Virtual Box and/or Windows Virtual PC.

Background/always on apps are: Box, Dropbox, and Google drive; Amazon Cloud Player and iTunes, ~250GB library; AVG and MalwareBytes; CrashPlan+ for backup.

PC gaming currently is limited to COD: World at War and Hitman 2: Silent Assassin (both on Steam).

I hope this is a comprehensive enough list to provided informed feedback. :)

In advance of your anticipated help/advice/feedback/suggestions, I thank you so very much.

Here is my proposed build. I am re-using two (2) components from my current system.

BEING RE-USED:
HDD (Storage): WD Black WD2002FAEX 2TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5"

ALREADY PURCHASED:
CPU: AMD FD6300WMHKBOX FX-6300 6-Core Processor Black Edition

One of my concerns is the case I am planning on using supports a 160mm CPU cooler and the cooler I am planning on using is 159mm. Should I look at a different combination?

GPU: I am undecided between the following two (2):
Asus HD7850-DC2-2GD5-V2
(https://www.asus.com/Graphics_Cards/HD7850DC22GD5V2/)

ASUS GTX770-DC2OC-2GD5
(https://www.asus.com/Graphics_Cards/GTX770DC2OC2GD5/)

I currently run two monitors: a 26" via HDMI as my primary; a 19 via DVI as my secondary. I plan on replacing both with matching 19" or 21" DVI MONITORS. I will most likely add a third monitor of the same size as the replacements.

While I like the idea of being able to add an additional video card, which if I understand correctly I would be able to if I go with the 7850, I don't know if I would need to if I used one of the other outputs on the 770. Extra appreciation for your thoughts on this point.

Thanks again for taking the time to take a look at this folks. I sincerely appreciate any and all assistance even if it is a 'What the h*#@ are you thinking?'. ;)

Radeon cards need an active display port adapter to go past 2 monitors. Nvidia cards will do it with out any adapters. The 770 is also faster than the 7850.
That being said using both AMD and Nvidia cards I feel like the multi-mon experience is better with AMD cards. It just feels smoother.
I went from a triple monitor set up on AMD to a single monitor on Nvidia because I didn't like how it was performing with 3 monitors. But I also replaced my main monitor from a 22" 1680x1050 to a 27" 2560x1440 so I didn't really lose any desktop space in the process and my desk looks cleaner now too! If you are replacing monitors you might look into the Qnix Evo II or the Overlord Tempest. If you aren't as much of a risk taker as I am(Qnix is a...

If you aren't as much of a risk taker as I am(Qnix is a Korean monitor so if it breaks its going to be a b*tch getting it fixed) Asus makes a 27" QHD monitor for about 600$.

Yeah it looks like you put a lot of research into your build and you've picked out some good quality hardware. Personally i recommend sticking with a single GPU that is the best you can afford. The 770 will do everything you want it to. The 16gb of RAM is not strictly necessary but im not very experienced with virtual machines and it may be necessary. If you have the money go for it. Lastly i must say a 250gb itunes library sounds very impressive.
