Production defect? Or just me being clumsy?

I have recently bought myself a new MSI motherboard but was disappointed when it would not work with the CPU, RAM, etc. that I had bought. I did a lot of breadboarding in order to figure out exactly why the computer would not turn on and finally saw in the CPU socket that some of the pins had been bent ever so slightly. However I also noticed that 2-3 pins were entirely missing which I found to be very odd. I compared the socket (LGA 1150) to that of pictures I found on the web, and could clearly see that the socket pins indeed was missing. I originally thought this to be that of my own clumsiness, but after showing this to my friend he pointed out that if this had been caused by me, then the immediate pins next to the missing ones should at the very least be bent... This was not the case.

What I am left with now is a motherboard which I am sure is too expensive to repair and I do not know if this is a hardware defect. So my question is whether hardware defects like missing pins in a processor socket is likely, or if this is more likely due to be somehow having inserted the CPU incorrectly.

I will try to attack a picture...

Forgot to mention, but I already returned it to the store. Since they could see that I had already used the motherboard, they refused to accept it in return, claiming that I had broken it on usage.

That is why I am in doubt at whether I have any real case here...

Unfortunately, many computer stores are very strict with their return policies. I don't know if speaking to a manager would make a difference or not...but it may be worth a shot - especially if the front-line staff were not as polite or helpful as they should have been.
