I'll be building my system in 2 days and had second thoughts about 8.1. I'm not a fan of 8, but it is the newer OS.

Should I ditch 8 and use 7? I'm inclined to stick with 8, because it's new and different (also the same reason I'm not its biggest fan), but have been hearing it has issues with games

I've actually described 8 as being a cancer on my build

Windows 8.1 is somehow faster and has a better directX support compared to Windows 7 :D if you can live with the metro interface and it's start up, opt for windows 8.1, if you can't take the metro look, opt for Windows 7 :D

Win 8.1 with http://www.classicshell.net/ looks and feels exactly like win7, otherwise i wouldn't be able to use 8.1, the metro look is pathetic and ugly, best thing about 8.1 is the boot time and generally faster, issues with games i have nothing of

I run 8.1, and it took me like an hour to get used to it. I get frustrated with it occasionally but google has answered my problems in like 1.28 seconds every time.

8.1 supposedly has better security, and some games like Battlefield reportedly run better with Win 8.

I went for 8 because Microsoft had the 40$ upgrade from Windows Vista.... I couldn't pass it up. I prefer Windows 7 that is on my work laptop, but 8 is fine and it doesn't take that long to get used to it.

Pretty much everything I wanted to so far I could set up like my Win 7 PC. There are annoying nuances, but they have work arounds. Example :

The skype that comes with Windows 8 is full screen and you can't minimize it. Solution : download Skype desktop version and don't use the stupid Skype App that comes with Windows 8.
