The live transcoding detemines if you need a very powerful cpu or not. If you want to try what you have then it will stream files 'as-is' just fine provided you have a gigabit network from the server to the router. Find a common resolution and codec the ps3 and Bd player support and save your files in one of those formats.

As for drives don't worry about performance, even a WD green/Red drive can saturate the 100-120GB/s gigabit network.

How many users might access it at the same time. How many users will need video files transcoded on the fly at the same time? (ie converted from 1 resolution or codec to another while the video is being streamed)
what have you got laying around.?

OK I have probably a dual core and with amd hd- 5450 video card. 2 gbb of Ram. As many as 3 users can be on it at any given time. Ps3, PCs and bluray player connect to it. Don't really mind where its transcoded as long as it plays.
