I'm using a 1TB WD External HD with original cord (http://www.wdc.com/en/products/products.aspx?id=640). I haven't plugged it in to any other computers. It shows up in "My Computer" as "Local Disk", when it usually comes up as "My Passport", but when I "safely remove it" it is labeled as "My Passport". When I look in "Disk Management" it says it's healthy. I've tried to change drive letter, but that did not fix the problem. I would like not to format it for I wish to recover some content, but will if I have to. Dcould anyone help me find a solution to my problem?

At this point I would say the drive is lost. The reason it is showing up in eject hardware as the proper device is because your system is reading the driver of the software to name it. The name under my computer on the other hand is listed as local disk because it cannot read the disk partition information. You could try to utilize a disk error check tool to see if there is just a bad block or sector, occasionally the WD tool will pick these drives up and be able to test them even though Windows cannot recognize them. I have included a link to the program below. I would check on WD's web site if the drive is still in warranty and if so send it in for replacement, I know they also offer data recovery services through trusted partners who...

To clarify: Are you saying that when you plug it in to your system, it shows up as "Local Disk," but when you safely eject it, it STILL APPEARS under My Computer, but is now labeled as "My Passport?"

Sorry for the ambiguity, Yes when plugged in it appears under "My computer" as "Local Disk", when it normally reads as "My Passport, but when I proceed to safely remove it is appears in the list of devices to be removed as "Eject My Passport". After I click it to safely remove it, it ejects as normal. Operating Windows 8, by the way.

I take it you normally eject the device before removing it from a PC correct? If by chance you had it plugged into a system that had write caching enabled and the drive was removed without ejecting it the drive will occasionally not show up properly. This is occasionally remedied by attaching it to the system it was removed from without ejecting.

Yes, I do normally safely remove it. I do believe it was safely removed last time I used it, but I tried your suggestion and it didn't seem to fix it. Thank you for your suggestion though.

I have also included a link to that below. You can also search online for data recovery tools that also may be an option though I am not familiar with their use as I have yet to run into a situation where I didn't have a backup.
