OLDER CUSTOM BUILD

MOTHERBOARD
Gigabyte GA-965P-DQ6
http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=2453#ov

CPU
i was looking at getting an i5 it had the speed i wanted 3.4ghz n its about £170
but not sure if the board will support it i have an intel 6600 2.4 dual atm
was looking for an alternative to an i5 and the Intel Q9300 Quad 2.5GHz should go
in the board no problem its £110 but seemed alil low on the speed i was looking for.

RAM
the pc has 4gb of ram in it was looking to go to 8gb but its ddr2 and could only see
2gb cards the site i looked up the board on says it has quad slots for ram so i checked
and it has 4 x 1gb cards in it with 666mhz speed (240 pins) iv seen 4 x 2gb cards with
800mhz at £60

GPU
i did have the 7950gtx-2 which was fine but it was limited to dx9 so recently put in an msi gt640
with i think it was 3gb of vram it was £80 for that gpu

from what iv seen the Q9300 n 4 ram cards of 2gb each seems like about my best option
apart from that id have to go for a whole new motherboard which iv seen for about £100
but then id still need to spend £170 on an i5 about £70 on ddr3 ram cards and god knows
what else. im not against going that way but think i would rather work with what i have. . . .

what id realy like to know is what should i do in the way of upgrading my ram and cpu and
if the parts iv selected (q9300 cpu & 4 x 2gb ddr2 ram) are the best options. . . im looking to spend around £200 unless i will need to go down the whole new motherboard route then im willing to spend more. . . thanks so much for taking the time to try and help me with my question

Solution
CPU: The i5 will not work in your system here is a link of compatible CPU's for that board. The Q9650 is an option you could go for for a higher clock speed.

RAM: 2 sets of this RAM will suit you nicely for your application

Note that lots of this legacy system hardware you can pick up on eBay in great condition for usually allot cheaper. I would atleast check it out, see if you can't save some money.

Hey mate,

So the first and most obvious thing is neither of these CPUs will be straight up plug in compatible with your board as the bios (I assume) will be quite old, so either you need to upgrade it now or the route that I'd say is better is to go find a new motherboard, now I'd say based on your requirements you could just run a mini atx motherboard, trust me you will not see any difference in performance just check to make sure

thanks for the help its realy appreciated . . . wehler53 i had a look at those boards its crazy how affordable they are i could pick one up for around £50 thaught it wud b atleast double that n yea sorry i didnt even think about the bios i had updated it but that was about a year ago.

killakallies thanks for that list of cpus and for clarifying the i5s unsuitability for my system i was so confused about that lol. the ram that u posted is pretty close to what i was thinking of too but i didnt even think about getting good condition used parts that wud realy help make my money go further.

im glad to see i wasnt totaly on the wrong track n wish i cud mark u both for solving my problem as both solutions have there own merits :D . . . im still alil unsure what way i wana go but feel much more confident in the hassle cost n benefits of both paths. . . thanks again u guys seriously its awsome ur here to help ppl <3

killakallies i picked this solution as its easier to implement but i realy wish i could have picked both as
wehler53s solution will provide a stronger system with more longevity. . .

Since you have a GT 640 video card you don't have to upgrade much to have the CPU match it. The Q9650 will be fine.
Just an upgrade to a faster quad core should be just fine for you if you are on a low budget, you don't even need to get more RAM, 4 gig is plenty for 95% of computer tasks.

iv been doing some costings today and ended up ordering new ram cards and iv got enough money left from my initial budget to go for a used q9650 sadly a new one is abit more than im willing to pay, iv been bidding on afew but havent won one yet going to keep trying tho. so glad i asked you guys the best thing to do not being very aware of system parts i was so overwhelmed at the vast choice n endless options.

update . . . i just got a q9650 used good condition for £110 iv still got £30 from my original budget so going to the pub for a pint or 2 n saying a toast to u guys :D

Hope it runs well for you, cheers :)

Make sure your operating system is a 64bit one or you won't be able to use the extra RAM you got.
