Hello everyone,

Im in the process of doing a clean install of windows 8.1 PRO. Right now Im going through and installing my drivers, many of them are new ones compared to what I had before the install. After installing Intel Chipset SW 9.4.0.1026(old one was 9.4.0.1017), I immediately got this error:VIDEO_DXGKRNL_FATAL_ERROR, on a blue screen and windows restarted. Upon entering the device manager I noticed that there was an orange triangle over my NVIDIA graphics card driver(GeoForce GT 740M). As you can imagine, I am a bit confused as to whats going wrong. Obviously when I see a video error, and then google search it and all I can find is stuff about NVIDIA graphics cards, I assume it is that driver that failed. However I find it very odd that everything ran fine up until I installed Intel chipset SW. Here are some more details:
NVIDIA driver: 9.18.13.2765
Also note that I did not install this driver myself, windows did it automatically right after the installation of windows.
Oddly enough my fan has kicked in after restarting and will not slow down, but the air coming from the vent is room temperature, and upon disabling the driver for my graphics card, it's still going.
Here is my computer make and model: Toshiba P50T-A
Im wondering if anyone can help point me in the right direction as to what is going on, and which driver I need to focus on either rolling back or updating. Ive been playing around myself, but can't seem to figure it out, any help is much appreciated. Thank you.

Not sure if this will help at all, I ran BlueScreenView and this is what came up for the crash. Says caused by driver: watchdog.sys caused by address: watchdog.sys+39ca and crash address: ntoskrnl.exe+14dca0

The reason is still unclear. I faced the same problem with the Intel Chipset 9.4.0.1027 drivers. After several attempts of installation and system restoring I found an algorithm which has allowed me to install the complete set of the Intel Chipset drivers. The idea is in two system restarts instead of only one restart which normally happens after complete installation of the drivers with Setup.exe

At the 1st stage in Device Manager in the "Devices by connection" view (Device Manager / View / Devices by connection) it is needed to update all list of the Intel drivers to "Intel (R) HM86 LPC Controller" using the "Update Driver Software..." context menu item.
After updating of the "Intel (R) HM86 LPC Controller" driver the system restart is needed.

Then at the 2nd stage Setup.exe can be started which shows only 2 drivers left uninstalled: SATA Controller and SM Bus. They can be installed with Setup.exe in the usual way. After it the second system restart is required.

My issue was using generic drivers from Intel and NVIDIA, instead of the drivers sanctioned by Toshiba for my particular model. One thing I learned from this experience was that sometimes OEM manufacturers alter the drivers used in their computers. When it comes to laptops you are generally better off getting all of the drivers from the company you purchased the laptop from, mine being Toshiba. After trying to fix this problem for days I ended up going to Toshiba's driver website and seeing what drivers were supported for my particular model. It turned out that the newest chipset from intel was not, and thus I reverted back to 9.4.0.1017. I was also trying to use the latest and greatest driver package from NVIDIA which was 331 I believe. After looking on Toshiba's website I saw that they were currently supporting NVIDIA 327.65 and nothing newer. Since reverting back to those drivers I have not encountered this problem.
Obviously this error was caused by using an incorrect driver, so if you are encountering it, chances are the graphics driver you have installed is not compatible with your computer. If you did the same thing I did before encountering this problem, my best advice is to use the drivers supported by your OEM manufacturer and not the newest ones located on Intel and NVIDIA's website.

This also solved my problem: very useful if you have a Windows 8.1-based computer that has a hybrid graphics configuration that uses both Intel and AMD graphics adapters. In this situation, the computer always crashes when it tries to resume from standby, and you receive the following error message: VIDEO_DXGKRNL_FATAL_ERROR
MS acknowledges: This issue occurs because the AMD driver does not support Runtime Power Management (RTPM), but the Intel driver does support RTPM. So they provide a work around for this issue.
