Slow gaming speed and possible solutions

Hi all,

I live with my brother and we both like to play online games. The problem is my brother also loves to stream/watch netflix while he is playing and this sometimes really slows down my speed while I'm playing and increases my latency. I'm sick of trying to catch him streaming and telling him to stop while I'm playing, and it's probably not fair. So, I've been thinking about how can I improve it and here are some possibilities I looked into:

1) Get a complete separate internet signal from Comcast (new modem). Based on what I read this is possible, although I would have to basically pay for 2 separate comcast bills. Also I spoke with 3 Comcast reps about this and one of them said that this is possible with no extra costs(unlikely) and the other 2 directly said it's impossible to do that. So I don't even know if this is an option. If this was possible, would it fix my problem?

2) Get a dual band wireless router, I think what we're using currently is a bit old. I'm not sure how dual band wireless routers work, but if it is going to make it so that we get signals that don't interfere with each other, I'd be totally willing to do this.

3) Get an ethernet cable and connect my pc to the wireless router directly while keeping the wireless going as well, but again, not sure if this would actually help my situation cause we're on the same network anyway, wired or not.

Sorry for the long post but I am open to any suggestions. Thanks for your time and help.

Get a better router and make sure he does not have access and lock him out with the parental controls :)

To some extent you can limit what someone can do with some of the more advanced routers. The high end ASUS and TP-link have advanced QoS and firewalls. DD-WRT has the most advanced option there are so if you can load that on your current router or another device.

The simple way that may work is to just go in and block netflix or other sites that are causing a issue with the firewall. You can turn the rules on and off so you just go in when you are playing games and turn the rule on.

The other way takes a little more effort. On this one you need to ensure you are using a router that can set hard inbound limits in the QoS...

The only way you're going to have decent speeds playing games while he is streaming and playing would be to open an entirely different internet service. Getting a dual band router or plugging an ethernet cable will not work because you and your brother are already maxing out how much internet can come out of the wall for one connection. Setting up 2 internet connections in one house may result in some issues and it will cost a lot of money in the long run, but it's the only way to accommodate both your needs.

So you create a group that matches your game servers and call that "high" or whatever. In most routers all other traffic will be put in the low group. Now lets say you have 10m dowload speed of internet and you want to reserve 7m for gaming. You go in and set the "low" group to have a maximum inbound rate of 3m. This will leave 7m for your games.

Unfortunately there is no way to just say guarantee my gaming 7m with QoS...although it does appear you can it won't really work.

Now this method only works with well behaved applications. Netflix, youtube, twitch etc will be restricted fine using this method. Things like bit torrent and video streams that are really streamed using UDP are not limited very well using this method.
