Can I watch videos over a remote connection

Hi,

I am moving into a new flat with a slow broadband connection(5 Mb). My existing connection is 150 Mb. Im thinking of remote connecting to my existing connection to stream HD videos

My questions is does the remote connection usage speed remain constant regardless of what I'm doing on the remote computer. ie watching a video vs browsing the web

Thanks

Hi.

To put it in the simplest way possible. if you have 5mbit and your video streaming takes 3mbit, you will be ok so long as your other activity doesn't accumulate to more than 2mbit for longer than a few seconds. Loading web pages is generally ok as this happens over a short period, The buffer on the video will protect against short spikes.

with services such as netflix which adapt to your connection speed you would generally be fine on these kind of speeds. What you need to think about is what format you are streaming your videos in and how. Opening a DIVX movie in windows media player wont stream it in an efficient way.

You will probably want a program which will present a UPNP server for you to stream from and trans-code on the fly for you. I'm not sure what software would do this for you. VLC might?

You may also want to check and see if your routers have any QOS features.

Ok thanks, so basically the Mbps does depend on what the remote computer is doing. As is my limited understanding of Networking I was thinking that my connection to this computer may be like 'looking through a window' and therefore I could utilise the fast connection to stream HD Movies. So basically its better for me to just stream Netflix directly using my 5Mbps connection rather than connect to the remote computer to do so...

Yeah definatley, I thought you were wanting to stream local video files.

If you were accessing anything at "home" where the fast connection is, you would be pulling files from there using the upload speed at that end, and the download speed at your 5mb end.
