Did you buy your motherboard and considered your onboard sound to be fairly high end? My motherboard had a Realtek ALC 898 and supported Creative X-Fi Xtreme Fidelity but is still no a patch on the Asus Xonar I recently put in my rig. If you're happy with the sound you already get from your computer don't worry but onboard sound will generally be inferior to a decent sound card.

Headset wise I am more than happy with my Qpad QH-85 s. Check out the reviews online. That's what I did.

With my setup now I find footsteps and gunfire direction much easier to locate than my previous onboard/Creative headset combo.

My advice is get some decent cans. If you still find the sound lacking, get a soundcard. You could also go for a headset that...

Logitech G430 headset is good. It's what i'm running right now and features surround sound functions and handy software that can be used to adjust most settings. Also, I wouldn't get a soundcard if your board has built in sound. And if your stuck on it get a soundblaster from best buy. Also the G430 headset can be found at bestbuy for less then $100
