Hello all,

I'm planning on building a rig for professional video/photo editing, 2D/3D graphics creation, and a bit of gaming on the side. I would likely end up using it to edit 4K video in the near future as well. I primarily use Adobe CS6 (Premiere Pro, After Effects, Photoshop, etc.), Avid Media Composer, and Autodesk Maya. Mind if I get your input on my proposed specs?

CPU: Intel i7-4930K
CPU Cooling: Noctua NH-D14 SE2011
Motherboard: ASUS X79-DELUXE LGA 2011 Intel ATX
RAM: 64GB CORSAIR Vengeance LP DDR3 1866MHz
SSD (boot drive): Samsung Electronics 840 EVO-Series 250GB SATA III
HDD (internal storage): Western Digital Caviar Black 2 TB SATA III 7200 RPM
Graphics Card: EVGA GeForce GTX780 SuperClocked 3GB GDDR5
Power Supply: EVGA SuperNOVA 1000 P2 1000W Power Supply
Optical Disc Drive: LG Electronics 14x SATA Blu-ray Internal Rewriter
Case: Corsair Carbide Series White 500R Mid Tower
OS: Windows 7 Professional Edition

Appreciate your feedback!

Maybe the Corsair AX860 instead. AX line made by Seasonic the RM is made by someone else. I think they are close in price. $190 vs $170.

I personally opted for the Samsung 840 Pro. Again $20 difference, but it uses longer lasting and faster MLC.

There is a very good chance that your HDD will bottleneck your system. Typically people with setups like yours opt for a RAID array using a hardware card however that will add $$$ to your build. $100/HDD + $1000 RAID card.

GTX780 will likely give little benefit over even something like a 560Ti to your system. Reason above. You are probably going to be HDD bottle necked, so any GPU acceleration will be slowed down by your HDD.

As for Windows 8 vs Windows 7... Windows 8 is a lot faster...

Thanks for your input. I'm indeed debating on whether or not to get Windows 8. Thus far I've had very little exposure to it. Do you (or anyone else) have any experience working with content creation software on an 8 machine? If so, how does it compare to 7?

As for Windows 8 vs Windows 7... Windows 8 is a lot faster to boot, but otherwise the same. I bypass the metro screen and add my own toolbars in the taskbar. People complain about the start menu being gone, but I just setup my own toolbars in the taskbar. It makes it easier to access my software without having to go into deep menu hierarchy. Basically Editing=>Adobe=>EXE vs. Start=>Programs=>Adobe CS6=>Premiere Pro=>EXE. For other software I pin to the taskbar.

Either way, your build will be very fast. Yours is slightly better than mine (GTX 780 vs GTX 580) and it is great to edit with.

A note about rendering though. Some plugins and codecs will cripple your system! I have had many instances where my old Q6600 build performs on par to the 4930K system for rendering/encoding. The 4930K utilizes around 10% and renders at a crawl! It's not the CPU or any hardware, but bad optimization on programmers or using quicktime formats like DNxHD, Prores, etc... (32bit server = 4GB RAM max!!!).

Appreciate your two cents. I'm gonna go ahead and opt for the 840 Pro SSD and Windows 8. Unfortunately, I indeed can't afford a RAID array at the moment, but I figure I can add one to this build at some point in the near future.

Also, thanks for the heads up on potential issues with certain plugins and codecs. One would think some of those formats would be optimized to make use of greater system resources by now.

Another question: has anyone had issues with the spacing between the Noctua NH-D14 SE2011 cooler and the fully loaded DIMM slots on the ASUS X79-DELUXE? I've read about some instances where the CPU cooler would actually push against the neighboring RAM sticks, and I would definitely love to avoid that. If this has been an issue for you, can you recommend an alternate CPU cooler or alternate set of RAM that would be better suited for this build?
