I was hoping to get some advice and direction on some potential asset management tools for a small/medium sized company.

Pretty much looking to have a centralised area where we can add, monitor, track and keep up-to-date with all of our IT assets in the company. I have been looking at a few bits of software, such as Sysaid, but they seem to be a bit feature-rich for what we need. Especially if we spend money on a tool, we don't want to spend money on additional features that may not be used.

Has anyone got experience with any such tools/software?

Thanks!

If you just want to track status/location of IT assets, just use an excel spreadsheet. Check HERE on microsoft.com for examples. I used one of these to track about 400 pieces of IT equipment for years. As with any software, the sheet is only as accurate as the effort taken to maintain the data.

Excel is what we currently keep all of our data on. It's just nice to be a bit more advanced these days ya know?

I'm pretty happy using excel, but it's the guys higher up that want something a bit better.

If it's not broken, why fix it? I have also used MS Access (tell 'em it's a data based software, which it is) by converting excel into access format (helps if you know how to use access) and I've also used quickbooks inventory mgt (used that for tracking +/- $10mm worth of trade show fixtures). For small applications, excel still remains the way to go for me.
