I have been editing a video from my storejet external drive, suddenly the drive when plugged in asking to be formated, i took it to a friend and they booted it from ubuntu and still could not see the drive, it hasn't fallen or giving those clipping sounds, but i was adviced i had been using a broken cable and after a while it was being promoted to format, as such my only option is to format, the folder am editing from is 200GB and the companies i've askee are qouting just too much for my pockets, anyone with any advice.. appreciated, the files are about 1gb each as they were .mov files.. thanx in advance

Did you try a new cable? If yes, you can try to remove the drive from the case and see if it will read OK if plugged in directly into a computer.

If it will see it, you can try to use Testdisk to attempt to restore the partition data. If that does not work, try Photorec to try to get the files back.

If recovery software does not work, you need to get the drive looked at in a data recovery shop, which does cost quite a bit.

In the future, do not work on files directly from an external drive, only use them for backup or moving files between computers.
