Hi,

I'm currently using a stock Gateway FX6840-23 i7 860 8GB but replaced the graphics card with an AMD Radeon HD 7700 series (I think the 7770) around 6 months ago. The computer is from 2009 and is rapidly reaching its 5th year of constant use.

I was having a bit of a netflix marathon and about 2 hours in, I hear the fan rev up ungodly fast and then the monitor loses signal like I pulled the hdmi cord out of it. The computer itself is still on and running (I can hear netflix continue to play) but I think the mouse and keyboard go down as well. (can't shut off netflix). I hard shutdown the computer and can bring it up again with no problems. No error report in the event logs aside from the kernel losing power when I hit the button. I assume its a fluke and try watching netflix again. It does the same thing after an hour or so.

I open the computer and give it a meticulous dusting. I generally keep up with removing dust so it's not bad in there. Nothing seemed unusually hot either.

Yesterday I installed HWMonitor and kept an eye on it as I ran FurMark for about 15 minutes. After 8 minutes, my GPU kept at a steady 70 degrees Celsius and my CPU never got over 47 C for the remainder of the time. FurMark is more intense than what I usually put my graphics card through so I don't feel the graphics card or over heating is the problem, but I've been wrong before.

My concern is that after 5 years, the power supply's output might have degraded. I'm assuming it's the stock 500W. I used extreme outervision's PSU calculator to the as close to the set up as I could and got a rating of 386 - 438W depending on how I set the capacitor aging.

Well, I'm looking for opinions on whats happening. I'm open to getting a new graphics card or power supply. Installing a new power supply will be hell though. The wires are tangled all throughout the nooks and crannies of this case like ivy.
