Some OEM image restore programs save the files in your user account, and some just wipe the whole drive.

Save all of your files to be on the safe side before restoring your PC.

You should look into using an external hard drive (or desktop PC if you have one) for backups. I use syncback to backup all my files once a week and then use macrium reflect once a month to do a backup image of the entire hard drive. If i got a corrupt OS, dead hard drive, or a virus that I could not completely repair the damage from I can be back up and running in 45 minutes like it never happened.
If the virus removed windows system files the you should be able to do a repair.

Always keep virus protection up to date and always have backups. 30 minutes to a load a backed up disk image is much nicer then 6 hours to restore the computer to factory, load all of your programs back on, transfer your files back, and redo all of your custom settings.

My Norton was uptodate but it took it out !! I spent half a day with the Norton online peeps yesterday , got disconnected once when we went to safe mode so he could take it out and put it back in. Finally got that done but it is still not working right. Last tech did some things to hopefully get my sound back but had to wait to restart computer after Norton download finished , took an hour. restarted my computer , still no sound. I will now try your suggestion. Thanks ! will let you know if does the trick .

Yes , my Norton was up to date and running until the virus hit. Norton did take it out and put it back in updated but they would not help me with my sound. Said I would have to contact Dell.

Ok, I did this but it did not restore my sound. I will have to download the Operating System but I am afraid this will delete all my photo's and video downloads. Dell said to use a PC Restore or a Factory Image Restore to download the Operating System. What say ye ?
