Hello everyone,

I'm new not only to this forum but to what seems like an infinitely complex world, the world of PC gaming itself. :??:

With each day I'm falling deeper and more helplessly into the seductive idea of getting lost in another universe; shooters, horror, mmorpg's *drools at visions of Skyrim and Guild Wars II on ultra settings in the thought bubble above my head

I want to build a decent gaming rig, budget around $1,300 (+/-), but as you can probably imagine, I'm as experienced as a newborn guppy and don't know where to begin...

After weeks of researching (which I actually quite enjoyed), I've compiled these components in what I think may serve as a starting recipe for my dream machine, please, please be so kind as to guide me, rip it to shreds if you must, just lend me your gaming PC all-knowingness:

P.S. I've heard of this "overclocking" :) I wanna do that :D

Motherboard:
Asus Z87 Deluxe WiFi Bluetooth SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0Mb

RAM: 8Gb DDR3 1600Mhz High Performance gaming RAM

Graphics:
MSI GeForce GTX660 2Gb Overclocked GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card

CPU:
Quad-core i7 4770k 3.5Ghz CPU (Overclocked to 8 x 4.6 Ghz)

Cooling:
Noctua NH-D14 Dual Radiator 6 heatpipe dual fan CPU cooler

HDD:
1Tb WD HDD 6 64Mb + Kingston digital SSD

Power Supply:
Corsair gaming series GS600 80+ high performance PSU

Soundcard:
Please recommend. I also enjoy some audio production and track mixing.

So, those are the basic elements.
I'll be damn grateful if anyone can jump in and help me out.
What's missing? Can I get away with any cheaper, lower level parts? Do I need to consider certain elements of a higher caliber? Am I living in a dream world thinking I can spend just $1,300 (+/-)?

Thanks so much for anything you can tell me. :D

Kind Regards
Xacchaeus the Unknowing (PC-related stuff)

I would recommend saving some money on the motherboard. Go with an ASUS Z87A and a wifi card or USB adapter (although if you game you will really want wired if possible for the lower latency/better bandwidth).

Get faster memory, like DDR3-2133 CAS9 --G.Skill Trident for example, if you want to do anything other than game.

Get a faster video card.

Agreed, an i5-4670k will do just as well for gaming

:D Thanks so much for everyone's responses so far :D this is so helpful you have no idea. I'm definitely leaning toward the i5 instead, that alone will save me a lot of money that I will probably be putting toward the GPU.

13thmonkey: Thanks! Will dial down on the RAM and put the money toward the GPU. I don't want a last gen. I will DEFINITELY spend the extra on the 770.

RealBeast:
Thanks a million man :D I'll shop for a cheaper Motherboard and put that money toward the GPU

That is excluding the monitor, keyboard, mouse etc. Might be able to push up to 1,400 or 1,500 for everything.
Build suggestion would be brilliant!!! :D I don't want to spend all this money only to discover that some multi-hundred dollar component ha blown due to incompatibility or overheating issues. Your experience and PC wisdom is massively welcome and appreciated here! :D

boosted1g thank you so much dude!!

Yeah I would prefer wifi, I guess it just makes it easier.

Dude thanks so much for the list - such a massive help I almost feel guilty it's free of charge :D !!
Turns out I'm actually saving on stuff I never needed. I'm stoked to start shopping.

You rock heavily.

:D

If it is at all possible, use a wired connection over wireless.
If you own the home and the router is only one wall away then it is really easy to put a network jack outlet on each side to get a wired connection.
If the router is more then one room away then a powerline networking adapter (one of the 500mbps ones) will give you a better connection then wireless can after passing through a few walls.

Thanks again, boosted1g!! :)

Definitely going for wired now, no question. I just didn't reay get it before, but with wireless basically no matter how fast and great my system is for online gaming, it'll all be dependent on an inconsistent and sometimes problematic wireless connection.

This is the kind of stuff I'd never have known had I not come here. Massively appreciated!

boosted1g please help ...

I'm going way over budget cause all these parts cost a lot more on my country. This build will cost me about R18,000, that's about $1,800 without a screen and accessories. If I import the parts, shipping costs will kill me.

Is there anything we can go a bit cheaper on?? If not it just means I'll have to wait a lot longer to save up enough cash.
FML.

Please let me know your thoughts...
Thanks so much.
