Desktop pc for gaming

Solution
Decent except the video card - upgrading the graphics card might require you to upgrade the power supply. Nvidia's 600 series is decent, but I would setup to a 760 - very energy efficient and good on a budget.
Gaming is most dependent on the graphics card.
The included GT650 is not considered as very capable graphics card.
Your son will be disappointed.
A less expensive i5-4670 would perform equally well in games.
May I suggest that you put together a plan to build a gaming pc as a project with your son.
Do the research on parts.
Your $1000 budget is plenty for a very good gamer.
And... the experience will be priceless.
