New $700 laptop with intermittent lack of keyboards at log in, multiple event errors, driver issues, black desktop due to fatal error. Nothing installed, just testing as shipped with 8.1 Windows. Has anyone received a trouble-free machine with this OS? If so, what make & model please?
( I do not want to restore, install drivers, etc. on a new purchase, without success at end anyway. Maybe I am old-school...)

I agree some models have issues, but you didn't provide the information that this happened on multiple machines of the same model in the initial question so I had to go solely by what you wrote.

It's also not really a Windows 8 issue usually, but a QUALITY issue to do with manufacturing the laptop hardware.

My advice is twofold:

1. Concentrate on ASUS, HP, or Lenovo.

2. Look at Customer Reviews online and find a laptop with the highest score with MULTIPLE comments (20+ preferably).

Asking individuals here is...

3 of the same one... 2 retail, 1 direct. And I do know computers. My 3 year old is fine. Did RMA, thanks. In the store the higher level model had a nonfunctioning trackpad on the demo. Ideapad Flex and Yoga are out.

Asking individuals here is fine, but that won't give you any reliable statistics.

(If you wonder why you can't find anything above 4/5 the reason may be people giving low scores because of the new W8 interface. I solve that by using Start8.)

If the machine has "only" version 8, then the 8.1 update is done through the STORE link on the W8 page. If you don't see it make sure all the Microsoft Updates are complete.

Very good advice, thanks. And the lower reviews do seem to feature Win 8 UI which i actually do not mind but the issues were all different input devices, even on the one with 8.1 installed. Unfortunately Lenovo has now turned me off. Was hoping for reliability there. Some people advise going with business models but the price tags, wow. Good to know the proper 8.1 installation.
