This the XP section - does that mean you upgraded quite an old machine to run W8? If that's the case, maybe the new system can't find drivers for older equipment.
When you take the small green plug out of the socket on the PC, and touch it against the metal, is there any sound at all? Try the front panel sound sockets - they may work.
