I have only 1 Gb RAM in a Gigabyte system. To increase RAM I have to upgrade the CPU. If I do this will I need to re-install Windows 7 (which itself is an upgrade disk from XP).
CPU upgrades don't require you to change anything except sometime the BIOS! Just make sure which ever CPU you choose is specified for your MB. If it is not there may be a CPU compatibility chart that also shows which BIOS is necessary for that CPU. Upgrading the BIOS is easy if you are allowed to use a USB stick. Occasionally there is a program in Windows for BIOS upgrades depending on your specific MB. The USB stick BIOS upgrade program is in "Tools" in you BIOS.
CPU is: Intel Pentium Dual E2160 1.80 GHz; 1 Mb Cache; 64 bit instruction set; 800MHz FSB
The only reason I was thinking of upgrading the CPU was that a memory increase (only 2Gb supported) needs the CPU to be 1066/800 FSB. Could you advise if I actually need to upgrade the CPU?
