I just became a Comcast/Xfinity customer a few days ago. I purchased a Netgear CMD31T Cable modem at Best Buy and had Comcast run the cable into my home. When I activated the modem, the Ethernet light would not stop blinking but I was able to connect to the Internet. I was not, however, able to establish a link to my Netgear wireless router. My PC shows I'm connected to the wireless network but states there is no Internet access. Netgear told me the modem might be bad. I returned the Netgear modem and bought the Motorola modem and it does the same thing (the Ethernet signal light will not stop blinking whether I plug the modem directly into the PC or through the wireless router. I'm at a loss as to what's preventing me from connecting to my wireless router and why the Ethernet light continues to blink on the modem. Comcast has been no help.

Solution
The first thing you need to do to to check the properties on your computers network card. On your computer go to start, control panel, view network status or task. On the left side click on change adapter settings. Right click on Local Area Connection then properties. Select internet protocol version 4 TCP/IPv4 and click on properties. Ensure that obtain IP address automatically is checked and obtain dns address is checked.

With regards to your modem lights, it's okay for the lights to flash, it just means that it is sending and receiving data via the Ethernet port. It is only blue if your network card or another device is running at 1000base T. You router was probley not connecting because you had a static address configured...

You interchange the word modem and router like they are the same thing, they are not.
You may have a combo unit that does both, but I want to be sure.

Unhook the modem from your router.
Connect directly to the PC.
Power cycle the modem [that means unplug the power and plug it back in]
Wait for it to lock up [US and DS lights solid, online light solid.]
Then call Comcast and register that modem to your account if you have not already.
The first page you should see is a provisioning page where you will need the account # and the phone # on the account, basically this is the provisioning step, next your way through it, and when done, you should have the modem reboot then be online. Once here, reconnect the router and depower the modem and the router.

Power up the modem and WAIT until its fully locked in. [5 minutes tops]

Now power up the router and again wait for it to do its thing, [5 minutes tops]

Try to connect to the wireelss, assuming you already set the wireless up some require you do this with a CD first.

I thought I had made it fairly clear that I had originally purchased a Netgear Cable Router to go with the Netgear Wireless Router (which I've been using foir three years). When I spoke with Netgear tech support about connectivity issues, they told me they were inclined to think the new Cable Modem I had just purchased was defective. That's why I returned it in favor of the Motorola Cable Modem.

To be more succinct: The Motorola Cable Modem IS NOT hooked up to my wireless router at all at the moment yet the Ethernet light on it still blinks non-stop. I have had Comcast activate/register the router multiple times and have recycled it myself multiple times - all with no luck! After Comcast has activated the Cable Modem, I have unlimited Internet connectivity but still have a blinking Ethernet light on the Cable Modem. Keep in mind, I am running the Cable Modem directly into the Ethernet card on my PC (no wireless router in the picture). Up until last night, I couldn't even send emails until I found a website suggesting I change the port on my email settings - which worked.

The main issues I am having deals with the question as to why the Ethernet light continues to blink on the Cable Modem, Motorola tells me it should be solid blue - not blinking. Second issues is the fact that when I do attempt to run the modem through my wireless router, I lose ALL connectivity to the internet and the Ethernet light on the Cable Modem changes colors from blue to orange. I want to get this system set up so I can use the wireless router in my house to broadcast using the Xfinity network. Surprisingly enough, Xfinity says they can fix the issue if I pay them $80 to provide me with the correct IPv4 settings.

Hopefully this is clearer.

With regards to your modem lights, it's okay for the lights to flash, it just means that it is sending and receiving data via the Ethernet port. It is only blue if your network card or another device is running at 1000base T. You router was probley not connecting because you had a static address configured on your computer network card. The reason why you have an amber light on the Motorola when you plug in your router is because it is only recognizing that your router is connected at 100base T. If it is an older router most likely it is only capable of running at 100base T. If it is a newer router that supports 1000base T connection, you need to purchase a CAT5e network cable.

After making the changes to you computer lan card setup as described above, connect an Ethernet cable from the Motorola modem to the WAN port of your router. Connect your computer to a LAN port of your router. Unplug your Motorola cable modem wait about 30 seconds, and plug it back in. Wait for about another 5 minutes, then power on your router, and then your computer. When your computer restarts your should be able to get on the internet. Open up your browser type http://192.168.1.1 and you should be able to access the router and configure your wireless.
