Hello all,

I am looking to upgrade in the next week my old prehistoric 5400 rpm 500GB western digital HDD (some color model). It seems in many games now my loading speeds have severely decreased and I also lack space.

I have heard many great things about SSD's but I do not want one just for my OS. That seems like a waste of money to me. I only want one storage space solution, to keep things simple. I am looking for at least 1TB of space and am looking for fast speeds. The thing is I don't want to fork out 600$ for a 1TB SSD.

1. Are there any fast HDD's that are just as good as an SSD and cost much less? I was looking at the western digital velociraptor but seem a bit skeptical.

2. Is it *easy* to move my OS + files to a new drive, whether that be an SSD or HDD?

-Asus VG248QE 24” 144hz 3D Monitor
-Corsair Graphite series 600t Case
-Intel Core i5 2500k 3.3ghz @ 4.4 ghz
-Corsair Hydro H80 Water CPU Cooler
-Asus P8p67 Pro Rev 3.0 LGA 1155
-EVGA GTX 670 FTW Edition
-Corsair Vengeance 8gb DDR3 1648mhz
-Corsair Professional series HX850w
-Western digital 500gb
-Windows 8.1 Professional, 64bit

Thanks for any help,
Darrin

You could get a 250Gb Samsung EVO for a little over 200$, and use that to install your OS and programs. All of your data like music or videos can just be kept on your current HDD.

If you only want 1 drive, and a 1TB SSD is too expensive, then a larger HDD would seem to be the answer.

1. If HDDs were 'as good' as SSDs and cheaper, there wouldn't be much call for SDDs, would there?

2. You can clone/migrate your current drive data to a new drive. CloneZilla, TrueImage, DriveImageXML, etc can do that. If moving to an SSD, i highly recommend a fresh install.

there are hybrid drives i have not seen anything on the performance but they claim to have the speed of a SSD and the storage of a HDD.

myself personally i went with a 120 gig boot drive and purchased a 1tb storage drive . the ssd i got boots my windows a lot faster than my old hdd did.
