Is this a good first time build for $1300?

I'm not sure on the case and the motherboard. Also, should I save $50 and grab the 2GB 770 or stick with 4? Thanks.

Save the $50. 2gb vs. 4gb is no big plus.
Read this:

You will want a cooler. A$30 cm hyper212 would be good.

And, yes, change that to a 2 x 4gb ram kit.

I might not pay extra for a gold certified or modular psu either.

I will not build today without a SSD for the os. 120gb Samsung evo is good.

With that budget you can get a new intel Haswell CPU (i5 4670k + Asus Z87-A). This won't give you a lot more speed, but with the new CPU socket you will be able to upgrade your CPU in the future. You could also get a 2GB GTX 770, which will perform about as good as a 4gb at 1080p resolution. Instead of 1x8gb, go with 2x4gb, and try to slide in a 120gb SSD for a generally quicker PC. Also, if you're not going to SLI, you don't need such an awesome PSU, a good 650w 80+ bronze will be enough.
