Hello, I recently had an error on my hard drive seemingly caused by my very young brother, who is about as gentle with technology as the Mongols were with Europe. So, I ran a full DSKCHK on boot, and it found two bad clusters fairly quickly. Now, however, it is going very slowly: I let it run all night, and it has been at about the same spot since midnight, at 79%. It is not stuck, as it goes through a thousand free clusters every couple of minutes. This, however, is unacceptable, as it would require the check to be kept running for days, unless it speeds up again. It is on stage 5, the bad clusters were found in stage 4. Can I safely force the computer off and still fix the bad clusters, or do I have to wait it out? Info on my hard drive: C drive, 500 GB 7200 RPM Seagate Barracuda.

I would test the drive with Seagate's own diagnostic software for DOS which loads from a bootable CD.
Download the CD Image (ISO file) from here: http://www.seagate.com/gb/en/support/downloads/item/seatools-dos-master/

Create a CD from the ISO file with IMGBurn: http://www.filehippo.com/download_imgburn/

Then boot your computer from that CD & SeaTools will open. I suggest you choose the Long/extended test.

If you have any problems with SeaTools (eg USB keyboard/mouse not recognised), test with Hitachi Drive Fitness Test for DOS instead. Download the CD Image (ISO file) from here: http://www.hgst.com/support/downloads/legacy-downloads#DFT
