Hey everyone, I was wondering about something concerning my PC and my friends PC.

My PC:
AMD FX-4100
Radeon 6850
8GB RAM
500Gb 7200RPM HDD

His PC:
Intel i7-2600
Nvidia 530 GT
8GB RAM
1TB 7200RPM HDD

Now here's the deal, we are both playing a game that isn't very popular and is atleast to my perspective, not graphics intensive. His PC has a clearly distinct FPS difference over mine. like 50~100 more FPS than mine. Can anyone help me out here? I've been assuming that it's his processor but I don't know.

Thanks in advance :)

Yes, processor is a huge difference. You have a slow (4core), and I say 4 core as it technically is a dual core which shares the actual core itself, but has floating points halfway through the core. And his is a quad core with hyper threading, which makes it a quad core but 8 threads, or like fake/digital cores. Intel and AMD categorize what a core is differently. It's almost, and I say almost, that if AMD consideres theirs a quad core than intel could consider theirs an octacore. But other than the cores, your processor speed is also slower than his, and intel cores themselves are also a lot stronger than AMD's.

So for the most part, everything about his processor is vastly superior to yours.

Yes, it's definitely the processor that is getting him higher frames, the AMD processors aren't the best as stated above: "It's technically a dual core". You could upgrade to a six core or even eight core processor as I'm pretty sure they all fit on the AM3 slot. Beware though, having an 6 / 8 core processor will be pointless and slow you down by quite a lot when playing games that don't utilize more than 4 core (The majority of them). If you have the money and time, I would upgrade your motherboard to either and LGA 1150 or LGA 1155 and fit in an i5. This would easily help your frames out (When changing motherboards, I think you would have to reinstall windows, which is a bit of a pain in the arse if you have an OEM install!)

Hope this helps :)

Yeah the processor is what I suspected, because my graphics card is vastly superior to his if I am correct.

Alright, well yours is an old slower amd chip, I would recommend a jump to the fx 6300. Yes its stated 6 core, but might or might not be in terms of how you define core. But its also clocked faster, has more cash per core, and stronger cores than yours. It should also fit on your board with no issues. The 8320-50 are great chips, I have one and it will blow a i5 away, but they are beasty cards and require a lot of power. Most lower end mobo that technically will work with an 8 core chip, shouldn't be used with one. They weren't designed for that power consumption and could quite possibly burn out. As far as trading out mobo and processor to go intels route, its a great idea if your planning a big upgrade, but you'd still be better off saving your mobo, getting a 6300 chip, and then dumping that price difference into a better gpu.

As for the i5, like I said I spend less and got a 8350 vs i5, and yes stock i5 is better for 'gaming' in most cases. But I also render videos and other things that require more cores and higher cashing. So my case would be fx 8350 vs i7. Big price difference. Now my amd is overclocked to 5.1 stable when I need it to, otherwise I run at 4.6-4.8 for gaming and everyday use. Now with those speeds and timing, it will blow away the i5, and I spend less. And when clocked at 5100 it will surpass an i7 which with mobo would cost hundreds more than my amd build. But im not dissing intel no no. But amd does give great budget/performance, and in budget builds allows for a better gpu on a given budget, which will be the hugest factor in gaming. But my next major upgrade will be i7, and overclock that, but I didn't have $1000+ at the time to go intel route with slightly better performance than my $700 build.

Yeah I can tell, because in newer games that are much more graphics intensive, like Starcraft II/Slender: The Arrival/Amnesia/Outlast his PC can't run a stable 60fps. Mine can and his can only get 20-30~ :D

Yeah I have a FX-6300 in it's box, but I can't install it yet because when I ordered my computer, it had a custom aftermarket cooler and the company removed the standard locking system to put it in. Waiting for my thermal paste to arrive so I can use the same cooler. Also, what graphics card would you recommend upgrading from a 6850?

For the FX-6300? For playing games like Battlefield 3 on 1080p I would say something like a GTX 670 - Radeon 7890

For the FX-4100? Something around a GTX 650 - Radeon 7770 (Will get a solid fps on medium settings methinks)

For the FX-6300, since I will be switching it out as soon as my thermal paste arrives. A card that's in the ~250-300$ range.

Radeon 7890 as it is £150 (Should be under $300)

I don't see any *Radeon 7890s*, did you mean 7870?

A 7870 would be your best bet yes.

If your looking for a $250-300 range gpu for that chip, my 100% recommendation would be either save up $50 more and get a gtx 770 ($350), or pocket the difference and get a radeon hd 7870 ($180). There are some chips middle of those two, but budget performance not so great. I'd honestly say get the 7870, make sure you get an msi asus xfx or something with dual/twin fans. Its a great gpu, I have one in my secondary computer with a fx 6300, and except for new very demanding games I get ultra low msaa or high settings with some goodies added on. Its a great card and at a great price. I have the 770 in my 8350 build and it performs better yes, but not double the price of my 7870 better.
