I connected my Toshiba laptop to a LCD projector. I went to Control Panel - Device and Printers - Connect to Projector - External Screen Only. Nothing showed on the projector and now my laptop has a perpetual black screen. How can I fix my laptop? Thanks for your help.

Solution
Plug in a usb external keyboard. Wait for about 10 until you think it booted into the OS and try the FN+F7 or FN+F8 or try any of the Function key combos from F3-F12 to toggle through display Also if you can get into the BIOS when the computer starts press F2. and reset to defaults.

I've already tried that, and nothing. I've powered off, removed the battery, pressed the power button for 30 - 60 seconds. Turned it on and still nothing. What else can I do?

Go to start and type hwsetup. Click on the keyboard tab, select standard F1-f12 mode then try FN+F5 again. You can also try taking the battery out, with the battery out hold down the power button for about 30 seconds, reinsert the battery and boot.

Also try:
On the Start Menu go to All Programs/Toshiba/Utilities/
Click on “Restart Flash Cards” if it exists.
Click on “Settings for Flash Cards” if it exists. Make sure the “Disable all function keys” option is unchecked and click OK.
Then try FN+F5 again.

I've tried Safe Mode by starting the computer and taping F8 several times. Can't see anything on the screen. Also, can't go to Start because the screen is black. Thanks for your ideas.
Any thing else I could do?

I know this is an old thread, but on most Toshiba laptops, especially with the Toshiba Value Added apps installed (which gives you the layout of the function keys on the keyboard), sometimes you need to press the function key that switches your display from the laptop to the projector twice in order for the laptop to actually do the toggle between display modes. I'm experiencing a similar problem with my laptop where I'm trying to connect a projector to it and all I get is a black screen on the laptop, with nothing on the projector either. It's very likely that your GPU does not have a problem at all, especially since your machine seemed to have been working fine right before you switched the display initially. Here are some solutions to try:

  • ■ What cable type are you using to go from the projector to the computer? It could be VGA to VGA, DVI-I to HDMI, DVI-D to VGA, and so forth. Make sure that you have the exact cable you need for your system. There is a difference between how DVI-I and DVI-D video signals are transmitted, so if you have the wrong cable, video signals won't be sent properly to your projector from the computer.

    ■ If you know you have the correct cable, look for a button or menu setting that will change the input on the projector (computer 1, computer 2, etc). If you have the wrong input setting configured on the projector, you will just get a blank screen there, too.
Hope this answers your question.

All the best,
Joe
