Computer Freezing More Often than Not!

Sometimes when I open games or run programs the computer gets a black screen for a good minute. It doesn't do it specifically to one game or program it does it to everything.

i7 920 (Have tried stock and OC and both freezes)
4GB x1
GTX 650 Ti 2GB
Gigabyte x58 MOBO

What should I do to troubleshoot this?
I am comfortable with swapping components to test.

Probably RAM. run memtest for 6+ passes.

Sorry I never used memtest before.
Do I just run it 6 times?

You must burn it to a DVD or CD and boot to it. Then it will automatically run. Let it keep going for 6 passes. It should take several hours.
As soon as you start seeing it list errors, you know your RAM is bad.

Will it not work with a USB? Also want to add that the Ram is new.
1 stick of 4GB Corsair XMS3

Is it because I'm running 1 stick vs 2 sticks (better performance? dont know)

Also, I have an extra 2x 4GB ram. An easier way would just be to swap the ram right?

2 sticks ALWAYS give better performance than a single stick. Dual channel ram is what you want.

Yes, you can create a bootable USB and run memtest that way.
