AMD FX 8350 Overclock limit for my MOBO?

Solution
Hi there Zherms, I run an 8350 and I have overclocked it on a few different boards. I started with a 970 board from Gigabyte that wouldn't overclock the cpu at all, yes, not at all. It allowed the cpu to run at stock settings but couldn't get it stable even .1ghz over that, it even wasn't stable using the stock turbo boost. I then upgraded to an ASRock 990FX board and I now own an Asus Sabertooth.

After spending time attempting to overclock successfully on all 3 I would suggest not to even mess around and to go right for the Sabertooth or the Asus Crosshair board. You can definitely overclock on other motherboards but I have had great luck with Asus. I am able to easily run mine at 4.8ghz and haven't even wanted to tweak it from there...

Anyhoo - The only way we or you will know your limit is to overclock. That chip is different then the next 8350 and not to many people whom are enthusiasts will use a 970 chipset with a FX 8350 with the intentions to overclock. Give what ya got a shot and report back, we might be able to help direct you once we see what is happening.

Have you ever overclocked?

In my opinion DO NOT waste your time and money on a 970 board, stick to the 990FX line for the 8350 so you can get more out of the cpu. If you don't want to go Asus that is okay, but make sure you get a 990FX board, you will be much happier with your purchase.

EDIT: I wanted to also add that I use an h100i so 4.5-5ghz is achievable with slightly better fans for the radiator. The cooler will overclock well without different fans as well but I dropped 10c with Noctua fans. Just an fyi :)
