Hello just here today to ask for some advice on building my Home Server.

Some things to keep in mind
- I'm doing a Higher HNC computing course in college so i know quite a bit, but still a lot more to
learn :)
- I have a £500 budget (Excluding the price of the HD's)
- It's main use will be for:
1. - File sharing and media streaming
2. - File backup from several devices
3. - Able to control the server from my main PC
4. - [Possible] Various game hosting (This would only be for hosting
games temporarily for example with friends on LAN and/or WAN)
Also the games wouldn't be too hard to run, source mod games
Would really be the highest point; even then only about 8 people max
- Has to be able to stream data at 1Gbps across my network (Probably CAT 6 STP for the main cables and CAT 6 UST for patch leads etc) <CAT 6 cables are very cheap now as well FYI>
- Should be able to support/connect to at least 10 devices at any given moment
- Must be able to run 24/7 at an efficient rate (No more than 200W PSU would be suited if possible)
- Take advantage of Red WD 3.5" Drives (Mabey x4 2TB drives to start with)
- Lastly it has to be within some sort of Telecommunications cabinet in a stack-style formation (not too large though) with enough room to upgrade storage space and add extra devices; switches for example.

I was thinking of using freeNAS as the main operator, it does look very appealing with its ZFS raid architecture and many more factors.
- Check http://www.freenas.org/about/features.html for more info

Now this is rather rough but if you need more information or want to suggest anything please let me know.

Thanks, Lewis.

The telecoms cabinet can vary, i would normally go with a standard case that included extra HD expansions but i'd rather do it right.

I'll also install whatever OS for the server on a HD less than 100GB (keeps the others free)

I'm moving house in march 21st as well, so i'll be wiring the home with STP CAT 6 cabling and ether jacks.

Later down the line i will some sort of UPS (not too expensive)
