Would these parts work smoothly together and would they be able to run games like planetside 2 and Total war: shogun 2 http://pcpartpicker.com/p/2HxtX

you will be able to destroy those games no problem. A couple suggestions though, step your mobo up to the extreme 4 its not much more cash and its a better reliable/OC ready board. Also 8 gb of ram is perfect buit you want it in 2x4gb sticks not a single stick for better performance

Yes, the parts will work well together. I would go with a dual-channel RAM kit, though.
