Currently my PC is configured as follows:

Disk C: on which Windows 7 is installed together with programs (no raid)
Disk D: on which all my files, photos etc are stored. this Disk is made up of two identical HDs and mirrored using RAID 1 with Windows

But today I noticed that one of the disk is not initialized ... what does this mean? Is the HD faulty?

When I right click on the disk and select "Re-Initialize"

Thanks Vincent for the fast reply.
I am getting disk not initialized in Computer Management Window.

When I try to re-initialize the disk I am getting this

thanks again

You are using some volume spanning feature of Windows rather than any sort of RAID provided by your motherboard chipset or RAID controller.
I guess this is OK to prevent data loss, but performance won't be great.
Windows has identified the redundant volume as missing.
The uninitialised drive is not being recognised as the same drive.
Was it replaced?

Try right clicking on the missing disk and see if you can remove it from the volume.
Initialise Disk 1 as a dynamic disk and see if you can then add it to the volume as a redundant drive.
