Dear all,

Slightly unusual request here! But.... I have built a PC for a friend, who is just waiting for a GPU to arrive. Since he can install this himself, I have connected everything else up, including plugging in a cable for the GPU's power (to the PSU). My friend would like to start the PC and configure all the settings etc BEFORE the GPU arrives next week.

My question is this: Will the PC boot without the GPU if the power cable is connected to PSU? Could this cause any damage?

Thank you kind people!

Solution
Yes, if the motherboard has onboard video.
Many people use PC's just fine, they haven't even heard about a graphics card.
However, you cannot configure everything before the card arrives.
You'll need to install GPU drivers after installing the card.

Excellent - The motherboard is a MSI Z87i Gaming AC, am I correct in assuming this would have onboard graphics?

And is it not an issue that there is a power cable leaving the PSU with nothing connected the other end? I had thought this would stop the computer from booting - perhaps because it thought there may be an issue.

Thanks!

Apologies, and thank you! At what point is DVI better? My screen does 1920 x 1080 max.
