Okay, so first off, I don't care about wireless whatsoever.

What is the best for a wired network?
Should I have a modem+router, or gateway, or what?
What are the advantages/disadvantages?

What SPECIFIC modem/router/gateway would you recommend?

We currently have: Xfinity TC8305C

That's going to depend on how many devices you need to connect to your network. Up to four, just about any router with a firewall is all you'll need:

Cable Modem --> Router/Firewall --> Internal Computer Network.

For more than four devices you'll probably want to include a switch behind the firewall:

Cable Modem --> Router/Firewall --> Multi-Port Switch --> Internal Computer Network.

Is a modem+router superior to a gateway? and why?
We will have at least 3 wired computers on the network, don't expect more than 4.
What specific models would you recommend?

Not overly familiar with gateways. From what I can tell, most routers also perform the basic functions of a gateway. Can't say which would be better. As for what specific model, I don't have any recommendation. Every router I've purchased has included wireless capabilities. Something like this TP-Link 4-port Gigabit Router should suit your needs and seems to have positive reviews.

You really should post new threads many times these older ones will get quickly lost.

This is mostly a matter of personal preference and the need for features. In general you will get similar performance with either solution.

The motorola with the 802.11ac is new and I had not seen that product before...and it appears you can't even buy it for another week or so.

The asus has a lot more bells and whistles it has support for advanced QoS and support for USB drives as well as support of for mobile broadband dongles and if that is not enough you can load dd-wrt on it.

This new motorola has support for MoCA which I have not seen before in a cable modem. The other motorola cable modem does not have it. If you need to run network over your tv coax this will make it a lot easier.

Only you can decide what features you need. Also be aware 802.11ac only works if you have 802.11ac nic cards. Also it will not make you internet run any faster you are limited by the amount you can buy from the ISP. The only reason you really need 802.11ac is if you have devices that can only run wireless and you are transferring large amounts of data from device to device inside your house.

Don't hijack other's threads. Start a new thread with your question.

Your router is your gateway. A gateway is the interconnect between your network and another network/Internet.
