Hi all.

I have Gigabyte GA-X79-UP4 mother board running an i7 4930k.

I've built it to be a hackintosh but I bought the 4930k processor which currently isn't supported. It's currently running windows and working well but I need it to be a hackintosh asap.

I'm considering switching out the i7 4930k processor to an older 3970X so that I can Hackintosh it. Saving the 4930k for a future build (I have a render farm).

Would I simply replace the chip on the motherboard or is there anything else I would have to do like change bios? I'm a bit of a noob with processors and bios changes. I've built PC's before but never had to do much with bios versions or flashing.

Thanks chaps.

Thanks for the response. As I mentioned in the original post the 4970k isn't currently supported as a hackintosh and I need them now.

The other reason is that I can only get the over clock to be stable at 4.3 on the 4k chip and the old 3k chip I can get to 4.6 which means its faster on cinebench rendering which is what I need.

Would you disagree?

I'll keep the 4k chip for my next build in a few months when the it's support on tonymac for the hackintosh.

Fair reasons. :) I am not that familiar with any sort of Mac. But from a Hardware perspective it will work and so will your overclock most likely.

Well i have tested an i7 3970X at 4.5ghz and it out performs the i7 4930k at 4.3ghz on cinebench.

Exact same spec just different i7.
