The question says it all...
so is it possible or is it an idea so "preposterous" its not even worth mentioning?
or there are performance hits since the the fans are <25mm and lose cooling capabilities?

Solution

I'm not sure about that. The stock fans that come with the H100i are 25mm thick and they produce close to 3.5 mmH2O pressure. Also the fans I'm using - High Performance SP120 PWM - are 25mm thick and they also produce 3.5mmH2O

It has to due with the breadth of the fan blades as far as I understand it :)

But all this is beyond the point. Even though Corsair says you can use the H100i (or specifically close loop coolers with 240mm rads) with the 300R, unless you use a micro ATX board (or a board that sits further away from the top of the case...

It would be retarded. The 25mm can't push enough air and would be so loud you'd end up with a hot airplane engine. Simple physics. To put it simply it would make the h100i worse than a low end air cooler most likey

by < I mean less than 25mm I kind of can't understand your message actually...

anyways I'm just curious if it can do that since I have severe space/headroom problems in my case (its a corsair carbide 300R Glass Edition) that I though maybe if I use a fan less than 25mm I could most probably fit it in...

unfortunately with water coolers, especial dual 120mm radiators like you have require good space and larger cases are recommended. Your going to have to get a bigger case buddy. No point trying to mod it to use smaller fans than 120mm since you will be destroying its performance.

Just to be clear, you are meaning <25mm thick, not height/length correct? If so the answer would still be the same (no go :( ) as you need high static pressure to push air through a radiator and I don't believe there are any <25mm fans that offer that kind of performance.

You could try mounting the fans outside of the case in a push (intake) configuration. That would save buying a new case but if it were me I wouldn't - open spinning fans are just waiting to "catch" something

Affect the rig as a whole? Not much, assuming the case is well ventilated already. Affect the performance of the cooler? Without a doubt. High static pressure is absolutely required to FORCE air through (or pull if the pressure is high enough) the radiator. The less air going through the rad = less cooling ability. I think I read somewhere that less than 1.5mmH2O will result in dramatic performance loss (can't find it now though, arrrrgh!)
