XFX XTR 750W vs XFX XXX 850W Silver

Hi all, I'm building a new PC for the first time and after several weeks of searching to see which components best suit me I have finally decided what to get. The first item I went to buy was the power supply, because it wasn't in stock - I asked a local shop if they had the XFX Pro Series Black Edition 750W (80 Plus Gold, full modular) and told me that they could get it within a week or two against a small deposit.

All's well so far...however, when I went to pick it up I noticed there was no 'Pro' labelling, although it did say it was 80 Plus Gold rated and it was also full modular. Moreover, the product code (P1-750B-BEFX) matched the one of the Pro Black, so I thought it may have been named differently for the EU market (I live in Europe). Nevertheless, when I got it home I did some searching around and found that in fact my PSU is from the new XTR series - tbh I didn't know the XTR range existed alongside the Pro series, or I probably would have said something in the shop.

Now, my question is this - the shop also has an XFX XXX 850W Silver edition for only a few euros more than the XTR, which seems to have a proven track record with several positive reviews - the XTR is as yet pretty much an unknown entity. I believe the XXX is also based on the Seasonic X-Series, while the XTR is based on the slightly inferior G-Series - is it worth going back to the shop, trying to complain that what I bought isn't exactly what I ordered and try to exchange the XTR for the XXX? The main reasons for doing so would be the higher wattage (although I don't really need it) and, mainly, the fact that I think it is slightly more high quality that the XTR. That said, the XXX has a lower efficiency rating, is quite older than the XTR, is not fully modular and I have heard that the Pro Series sometimes have a habit of making some pretty audible noises...so, what do you all think?

Thanks in advance for your replies.

Stay with the full modular and gold rated unless you need the extra watts for sli or crossfire.

Both are made by seasonic and are pretty much as good as it gets when it comes to PSUs.

I wouldn't go through all that trouble to downgrade to a non modular with less efficiency, although truth be told from gold to silver efficiency is not a huge change...

Read a few reviews, gold rated seasonic are top notch

1st: I think the XTR series will be trustworthy and follow in the xfx/seasonic tradition of quality. True, only time will tell.
2nd: I like to error on the plus side of things, and if a few dollars or euros will get you 100 watts more (always good to have extra in case of upgrades or overclocking) as that will let your PSU work a little easier and cooler.
So the question is: Do you want to be an "early adopter" and give the XTR a try, thus saving another trip to the shop etc., or get the 850?
I would get the 850, but that's me.

Thanks for the very fast replies - yes indeed, I have read a-lot of positive reviews about XFX/Seasonic which is why I wanted to ensure I got an XFX/Seasonic PSU. I'm quite sure the XTR will be a solid unit, it's just that, being based on the G-Series, it seems to be slightly inferior to the X-Series-based XXX, although as Adroid said it has a lower efficiency rating and is not fully modular.

nostall - I completely understand what you're saying, but I think 750W is already quite more than I need for my system, and the only upgrades I see within the next few years are an extra graphic card and perhaps water cooling; below are the rest of my specs:
Mobo: Asus Z87 Pro
RAM: Corsair Vengeance Pro 16GB kit 1600MHz (2x8GB)
Case: NZXT Phantom 530
Processor: Intel Core i7-4770k
HDDs: WD Caviar Black 1TB and Kingston HyperX 3K 120GB
Extra fans (2 already in case): 2x 200mm fans and 2x 120mm fans
1 optical disc drive
Currently no graphics card, since right now I need the PC to speed up the work I'm doing on my thesis and the processor's GPU should be fine for now - I do plan on getting one in the next few months though, and as I said above I may consider getting another one further on (for a total of two).

Very well. The 850 would possibly be needed with two video cards, but certainly not with your current setup; and by the time you go with 2 cards, power requirements will probably change - again - for the cards.
Here's a handy link for checking power requirements when selecting a video card:

I also found that EVGA's website has excellent information regarding their video card power requirements.
Good luck with your studies.

The XFX XXX units are not based on the X-series, the X-series are all gold rated units, the XXX units are based on the Seasonic M12D platform, still good and widely used, but not of the same tier of the X series in terms of efficiency hence why the main line of XXX units are only silver rated.

The Black Edition full modular Gold rated units are based on the X series. You are correct that the new XTR units are based on the G-series, but the 550W and 650W just went through reviews at JG and HW Secrets and did extremely well, i see no reason to be suspicious of the platform

Thanks a-lot for the tip :) If I'm honest, I'll probably only ever install one card, but someday I'd like to dabble with having a multi-GPU setup.

Thanks also the rest of you - although I'm still not sure what I should do :p I guess the big question is this: will the fact that the XTR may be slightly inferior to the XXX make much of a difference in the real world? As I said, although an extra 100W would be nice, I don't really need them, but obviously as mentioned it's got a more proven track record than the XTR... :pt1cable:

Thanks a-lot for the clarification...I still think the XXX are slightly better than the XTR (on the basis they are able to deliver more output current for the same wattage), but the very positive reviews you've posted of the G-Series put my mind to rest a-bit :p

Wow, 4 PSUs and no problems...impressive. Pretty much confirms the excellence of XFX/Seasonic PSUs.
