I have Windows XP running happily in Oracle's VirtualBox in a Mint installation but despite having both ticked as bi-directional, I can't drag and drop or copy and paste.

Which part of the blindingly obvious am I missing?

Have you installed Guest Additions in the XP guest?

No, but I did see that setting and wonder if I should have done so to get the USB drive recognised. That was when I discovered sharing drag and drop so I thought I could by-pass the need for a Guest Additions CD if I just moved stuff from one system to another. I'll seek out the requirements and create a CD then.

Thanks for the tip.

I'm stuck again - having run the Guest Additions I still have no USB. I've taken the flash drive out, closed and restarted the VM and plugged it back in but still nothing recognised. The Host has it in File Manager but I still can't drag and drop or copy and paste so I must be missing something else.

All I have showing in XP>My Computer is the C: and the new virtual CD drive. I didn't have this problem with paid-for VMWare so it's just something in VB that I can't find or configure properly.

EDIT: I've unmounted the flash drive in the Host system but it still fails to show in the Guest. XP shows standard Host controllers in Device manager and the USB mouse is working in spite of the message "No USB devices connected."

1. For USB 2.0 support you need to install the VirtualBox Extension Pack, which you can get from www.virtualbox.org .

2. Read section 3.10 of the manual, particularly the bit about creating filters.

3. Depending upon your Linux version, section 12.7.7 may also apply.

4. Although your mouse is USB, VirtualBox is probably seeing it as a PS/2 mouse, so that may be a red herring. The same would be true for a keyboard.

(Manual references are based on version 4.3.6 Edition, but I don't think they have changed for a while.)

Thanks again, iJack - I think I should have printed parts of the manual instead of trying to read it onscreen. I'll get back to the job later.

And don't forget

sudo adduser "your user name" vboxusers

I always forget to do that.

That's the section 12.7.7 bit; but it doesn't apply to all Linux distributions.

I know, but I still always forget that. It does apply to Mint though.
