missing operating system

have emach with windows 7 home 64 bit, also Hitachi HD 640 installed, shut it off other day now shows missing operating system, tried everything that has been suggested so far with no results. Have booted and rebooted numerous times to no avail. Done a repo link for windows xp it tried to start but stopped . Been down for numerous days. Any suggestions welcomed

The Hitachi is the OS drive? Run the Hitachi Drive Fitness Test from a bootable CD. If the drive works, try a repair installation with the Windows 7 installer disk -- if you don't have one, download the Home 64bit ISO from HERE, burn it to a DVD, and boot from it and select startup repair.

tried everything mentioned, hard drive started and ran the xp disk, but when i put in a windows 7 disk came back up with missing operating system. At the point right now to buy new computer
