APU Gaming System under $500

I have a buddy who is looking for an APU system under $500 (maybe 550 tops). I'm no expert on this and i want to explore the options, although if you can recommend a 'normal' system which will outperform an APU based system at $500, by all means post it below but please support your claim.
-Any suggestions appreciated, thank you.

Awesome, how do you think this'll perform in something like BF4 vs an APU system?

Compare these two benchmarks (as there are no A10-7850K APU benchmarks for BF4 yet)
The 7850K APU gets 49 FPS in grid 2 @ 1080p with the medium preset
The R7 260X gets 46 FPS in grid 2 @ 1080p with the ultra preset
As you can see, the R7 is substantially more powerful than the top of the line APU
