i need some extra money to help pay for college and i figure hey, i know a bit about computers and i learn very quickly, why not fix computers on the side? so im asking what tips you may have, necessary items that i may not have (i have a multi meter and hand tools, im an electrician ~60hours a week) how do people decide what to charge, is this worth any of my time, etc etc. this isnt as a serious business, just some extra money on the side, more of a hobby that id get paid for.

Solution

Yeah flat rate would probably attract more customers. i wish i the skills to repair computers, i know how to build but not repair. Good luck with the business.

The way i'd do it would be work out how long it will take you to fix a problem then times that by what you think is a reasonable hourly rate, then add on any extra costs like new parts. Not sure if thats the best way but thats what i'd do.

thats what i was thinking. or instead of hourly charge a flat labor rate. time isnt a big deal to me since honestly unless im working or actually at school all im doing is sitting around watching tv. atleast this would be something fun to occupy my spare time

well before i was an electrician i used to build workstations for car dealers. i have my knowledge of "repair" from troubleshooting builds that didnt post. so you probably know about as much as i do.
and thank a ton :)
