Hello,

My spare HDD died a few days ago and now I am looking to replace it.

I was thinking about it and thought it might be better to go with a SSD for my OS and make the one that has my OS on it now my secondary. Would this be a good decision or should I just get another regular HDD like the WD Black 1 TB or the WD Blue 1 TB? I know a SSD would make things a lot faster but I was just wondering if it's worth it to switch to an SSD?

Thanks for any help you can provide!

Solution
It depends on what size SSD you can afford and how much stuff you have to put on it. You might as well take this opportunity to move to the modern world of SSDs.

I was thinking that I would just put things like files and stuff that won't be moved or deleted a lot on the SSD so things like my school work and the OS and possibly some programs. It looks as if the highest I can afford is a 90 GB but I think that'll fit everything I want.

Yeah, that's what I thought as well, I've heard and wanted a SSD for a while but never really thought of a good reason to have one until now.

I don't know what brands are the best in the world of SSD's though. How is Mushkin? or Sandisk? or are both of these brands not all that great?

Thanks for the help.

Here's a SSD hierarchy chart that isn't too old: http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/ssd-recommendation-benchmark,3269-6.html

You're probably going to do a clean install of Win7 to the SSD, since cloning it won't work if the SSD is smaller than the used space on the HDD. Here is a guide to go by to get the best performance fron the SSD. There are a few differences between the way data is stored on SSDs compared to HDDs.

(sorry, had the wrong link at first)

Great! That hierarchy chart will help a lot.

I figured I would have to do a fresh install, it's no big deal and probably would have done it anyways just to be safe but its good to know why it needs it.

Thanks again for all the help! :)
